'Idol' winner visits 'Port for shopping spree
Posted by Matt ● Kelly News ● Comments 0Discuss

NEWBURYPORT — Petit Bijou owner Richard Coco celebrated the one-month birthday of his store in a big way Monday when Kelly Clarkson went on a shopping spree.

"She gave me her credit card and license, and I said you must get teased a lot because you look like Kelly Clarkson," Coco said. "She said, well I am Kelly Clarkson."

Clarkson, her mother, sister and a small child were visiting for the day while staying with friends in Portsmouth when they stopped in the 10 State St. store.

"I didn't know what to think," Coco said. "My wife is a big 'American Idol' fan, and she was always our favorite."

As the American Idol winner browsed the store, Clarkson's mother pointed out two vivid paintings hung on the store walls.

One titled "Blue Rose," and the other, "Cello," both by Lawrence painter Javier Osorio, originally of South America, immediately captured Clarkson's attention.

"She loved them," Coco said. "I always said it would take a certain someone to buy these paintings, and it's nice it was a local artist."

When Clarkson told Coco she would take both, he, then unaware of her day job, made sure she knew the price tag of the art work.

"I said, you do know one is $1,400 and the other is $1,600?" Coco said. "She said she would take them both and asked if I would mail them to her."

Clarkson had the paintings shipped to her home state of Texas and also bought a headband, pendant necklace and bangle bracelets. Though Coco is tight-lipped about how much the singer spent, he did say the bill was in the thousands.

"I only had two sales yesterday," Coco said. "She was my second, and it was a big sale."

Clarkson spent a half-hour in the store trying on the various jewelry, hair pieces and handbags the new store sells before moving on to other downtown businesses.

"I said it was nice to meet you and I hope you come back to Newburyport soon," Coco said. "Then she left her gold card, so I had to run down the street and chase her to give it back."

Chamber of Commerce President Ann Ormond says Clarkson's visit is a testament to the city's downtown tourism.

"You never know who is going to pop up downtown," Ormond said. "She flew under the radar, and we heard about it the next day. That's the thing about Newburyport; you can get so lost in the beauty and magic of it that you're not looking for celebrities like you would be in Boston."

Coco said he immediately called his wife, Brigitte, with whom he co-owns the store. The store name is a tribute to his wife's French roots, and her mother Lucienne Rey, also an American Idol fan, works in the store.

"Brigitte is at a trade show in New York and was freaking out and screaming," Coco said. "We hope she comes back and visits soon."

Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson will reprise their successful 2 Worlds 2 Voices tour this fall with concerts in Canada and the U.S.
The unique tour, combining both superstar bands and both acts on one stage for a combined non-stop set, sold out 15 markets from mid-January to mid-February. They have now booked 24 additional shows beginning September 25 in Winnipeg, MB and ending November 22 in Baltimore, MD.
The success of the winter tour helped put to rest the tough 2007 that Clarkson experienced after feuding with her record company over the release of her last album, and having to postpone a prior tour due to slow ticket sales.
Steve Moore of MEG/AEG Live Nashville will again promote the entire tour.
"We were thrilled to bring this unprecedented concept to the marketplace earlier this year," said Moore in a statement. The demand for additional shows has been overwhelming."

The seemingly unlikely pair of country star Reba McEntire and first-season "American Idol" champion Kelly Clarkson will hit the road this fall for a joint tour that stops Oct. 24 at the Target Center.

According to a press release, tickets will go on sale Sept. 13.

The duo joined forces last summer after Clarkson signed with the management company run by McEntire's husband. They recorded a song together for McEntire's "Duets" album and, in January, embarked on a sold-out, 15-date tour.

The fall dates will mirror the format of the first outing, which saw McEntire and Clarkson perform one combined set that included numerous duets and solo songs from each artist. — Ross Raihala

Kelly Clarkson Papal Concert

Kelly Clarkson, the first season’s winner of American Idol, sings a rousing rendition of the hymn “Ave Maria” for Pope Benedict XVI at Saint Joseph Seminary in Yonkers, New York on Saturday.
About 25,000 young worshippers rallied for the Popemobile (and Kelly).
“I was so excited to be asked to sing for the Pope,” Kelly. “I grew up singing church music, and it’s always been a dream of mine to perform ‘Ave Maria.’ To have that dream come true on such a special occasion is truly a blessing.”

Kelly Clarkson adds her voice to youth rally
Yonkers, NY, Apr 20, 2008 / 09:24 am (CNA).- Kelly Clarkson, of American Idol fame, performed the “Ave Maria” as the concluding hymn for the Holy Father’s visit with youth at Saint Joseph’s Seminary in New York on Saturday evening.
She belted out the traditional version of the “Ave Maria” in multiple languages as a cross sectional representation of the crowd present. The Holy Father took a moment to greet her after her performance.
The crowd was charged by Kelly Clarkson’s rendition of the Marian hymn.
After the song, the Holy Father proceeded to greet youth at the ends of the platform. The crowds wildly waved yellow and white handkerchiefs as a greeting to the Holy Father.
The seminarians and religious novices of the Archdiocese of New York were all visibly thrilled at the presence of the Pope. They loudly sang the litany of the saints and the Lord’s Prayer in song with Pope Benedict XVI, led by an accomplished youth cantor from the movement “Communion and Liberation”.

American Idol - Stars to go on stamps
Posted by Emily ● Kelly News ● Comments 0Discuss

Saturday, 12 April 2008

American Idol has unveiled a range of limited-edition collectable stamps featuring stars from the talent show's past and present.

Former winners of the competition including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Ruben Studdard will appear on the new set of stamps, which will be issued every week for the next seven weeks.

Last year's champion Jordin Spinks, Taylor Hicks and Fantasia Barrino will also feature during the run.

Only 104,000 - roughly 2,000 sheets per US state - will be made available every week.

The Idol Gives Back foundation, which supports charities around the world and raised millions for underprivileged children last year, will receive the proceeds from the stamp sales.

The first stamp to be made available features 2002 winner Clarkson and can be purchased online.

The last stamp to be released will display the champion of the show's seventh season, which began in January.

The year's contest has been altered to give entrants the chance to demonstrate their skill by playing a musical instrument, in addition to showcasing their vocal talents.

The two-night finale of American Idol 2008 will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on May 20th and 21st.

Clarkson hopes fans like demos
by Michael D. Ayers - Apr. 4, 2008 12:00 AM
Billboard.com
NEW YORK - Kelly Clarkson has shared with Billboard.com her thoughts on four unfinished songs leaking to the Internet.
The new material from Clarkson surfaced earlier this week via the Los Angeles-based music blog Pretty Much Amazing. The four songs - "Close Your Eyes," "Ready," "One Day" and "With a Little Bit of Luck" - have varying sound quality, indicating that the tracks are in different stages of the recording process.
"I write all the time - lots of stuff not meant to ever be released, just working on ideas," Clarkson tells Billboard.com of the leaked work. "The fact that people have heard music that's not ready yet sucks, but I hope they like it."
In the wake of last year's well-documented public feud between Clive Davis and Clarkson over the dark nature of the material for second effort, "My December," it would seem Clarkson may be heading in another direction. The singer has flirted with country music ties in the last year, most notably through budding relationships with Reba McEntire and Martina McBride. The folksy arrangements of the new tunes suggest a bare-bones, country approach.
Only "With a Little Bit of Luck" continues with the dark rock sound favored on "My December," suggesting it could be an outtake from those sessions.
Blog editor Luis Tovar says his traffic skyrocketed this week, with fans looking to hear the tunes, as well as staunch defenders of Clarkson's right to keep her work private.
"The Crazy Clarkson Fans,' as one person called them, were amusing at first, annoying later," Tovar tells Billboard.com. "But it's great to see the brand loyalty out there. These people are ready to go to war for Clarkson. It's kind of cute, almost."
Tovar says he's unaware of the songs' origins, saying only that a friend passed him a disc that contained them.
Having completed a tour with McEntire, Clarkson is scheduled to perform April 19 for Pope Benedict XVI during his scheduled New York visit.

Kelly Clarkson Storms Stage At Carling Academy

Mar 18 2008 Beverley Lyons

SHE might have been barefoot but Kelly Clarkson managed to stomp her way through a rocking set last night.

The winner of American Idol showed off her powerful and unique voice with a medley of songs from her three albums as well as her forthcoming one.

The crowd lapped up Kelly's banter as well as her songs as she played the first of a two-nighter at Glasgow's Carling Academy.

She remarked: "It was so freezing today, but the people made it hot."

They even forgave her when she suggested that anybody not wearing green for St Patrick's night should be pushed over by their neighbour - not realising the Old Firm connotations.

On rocky numbers like Behind These Hazel Eyes, Miss Independent, Breakaway and the foot-stomping Walk Away, Kelly displayed energetic vocals with a bluesy undertone.

She sounded great as she worked her way through slower ballads like Maybe from her album My December and Beautiful Disaster.

She even managed to showcase her personality during the song Chivas, a hidden album track named after her favourite shooter which intoxicated everyone. She soon had everyone standing and singing along as she belted out hits like Because Of You and Since You've Been Gone.

Fans will no doubt be counting the days since she's been gone and those lucky enough to have a ticket for tonight won't have long to wait.

Reba and Kelly rock Wright State

FAIRBORN - Sometimes seemingly odd collaborations can turn out harmonious results.
That was certainly the case recently at Wright State University's Nutter Center in Dayton when a sold-out crowd of 9,694 caught the "Two Worlds, 2 Voices, 1 Stage" tour featuring country music icon Reba McEntire and original "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson.
The pairing may seem odd, but the connection between the two began years ago when Clarkson was in the sixth grade and a friend turned her onto McEntire's music. After Clarkson won "American Idol," McEntire made a guest appearance on the show to surprise Clarkson and perform with her. A friendship was formed, and last year, they performed on CMT's "Crossroads" together, sparking the idea of a tour.
The result was electrifying as the two rose to the top of the stage and began their 90-plus-minute concert on a high note, performing The Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams". The two shared the stage the entire concert, alternating between each other's songs and performing them together. A highlight was the performance of McEntire's "Why Haven't I Heard From You?" Clarkson nailed the song as she kept up with McEntire's power-packed vocals on the song.
Watching Clarkson's stage presence and performance style, one may forget her young age. Her vocal range is exceptional, with her only drawback being at times she over-sings a song.

Clarkson will be joined on the stage by former U of I football players, members of current U of I teams, and to-be-determined local entertainment that will serve as opening acts in a celebration that will happen the night before the Iowa football team’s annual spring practice.
The Gridiron Bash is a national event that includes concerts similar to the one being put on in Kinnick Stadium at more than 20 other Division I football schools. The list of participating institutions includes, among others, Penn State featuring Fergie; Colorado featuring Counting Crows; Tennessee featuring Taylor Swift; Kansas State featuring the Goo Goo Dolls; and Texas A&M featuring ZZ Top.
Ticket information for the event will be announced next week. Persons interested in learning more about the Gridiron Bash are invited to visit gridironbash.com.
“Kinnick Stadium is a special place and our fans have always looked forward to our spring football event. McEntire, Clarkson unite different audiences, genres

The Wichita Eagle

If the pairing sounds odd -- 52-year-old country legend and television star Reba McEntire sharing a stage and a set list with 25-year-old "American Idol" winner and pop/rock star Kelly Clarkson -- it kind of was.
And yet, the singers' "2 Worlds 2 Voices" tour, which stopped Thursday night at the Kansas Coliseum, worked.
The duo performed 25 songs over two hours in front of a sold-out crowd of nearly 9,000, spanning both singers' target demographic of fans.
The pairing made the show an easy sell for Robert Barnett, a longtime McEntire fan whose 8-year-old daughter, Selena, likes Clarkson. He got his tickets the first day they went on sale.
"I love Reba," he said. "It's the hair. I love that wild red hair."
On stage, the singers explained how their teaming came to be. The two, who recorded a duet of Clarkson's song "Because of You" together, had also appeared on a CMT show called "Crossroads" and had enjoyed singing together. They wanted to take their collaboration further, which worked fine since McEntire's husband manages both singers' careers.
During the show, neither singer left the stage. Instead, they traded verses, or one sang backup for the other.
The show started with the pair, both wearing jeans and sparkly sleeveless shirts (and no shoes for the oft-barefoot Clarkson), teaming for a rendition of the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams." After that, they glided back and forth between hits, moving from "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" to "Hazel Eyes" to "Fear of Being Alone" to "Ms. Independent."

Reba McEntire, Kelly Clarkson Rise to the Occasion in Concert
Posted by Emily ● Kelly News ● Comments 0Discuss
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson bring out the best in each other, and it's clear that their 2 Worlds 2 Voices tour is no gimmick. They really do love singing together.
From the curtain's rise to the encore, there was never a time when either singer left the stage during their Friday night (Jan. 18) concert in Louisville, Ky., and they traded verses like they've known each others' songs for years.
For someone who's been around as long as McEntire, it would be really easy to just go through the motions, sing "Fancy" for the millionth time and cash the big check. However, she is clearly giving it her best shot -- and smiling all the way through. Six or seven times in the show, Clarkson gushed about Reba, Reba, Reba -- maybe too much -- so the expectations for Clarkson's fans who don't know a thing about McEntire were probably very high. As always, the ambitious country singer is up for a challenge.
Of course, Clarkson is no slouch either. When she sang "Up to the Mountain," McEntire stopped the show to get a tissue, then called her one of the world's greatest vocalists. Many times, McEntire slipped behind the back-up singer's microphone for harmonies and choruses while Clarkson worked the stage. It reminded me of the scene from Dreamgirls -- when Effie declares, "I don't do backup!" -- only because a completely opposite scene was unfolding.

McEntire-Clarkson tour blasts off at Nutter Center
By Carol Simmons
Staff Writer

FAIRBORN — Reba McEntire, the country music superstar and actress, and Kelly Clarkson, the Grammy-winning pop-rock singer and 2002 "American Idol" winner, launched their limited-run "Two Voices, Two Worlds" tour Thursday night to a sell-out crowd at Wright State University's Ervin J. Nutter Center.
Launched? Let's say they blasted off, as into the stratosphere.
And they did it without fancy sets, fog machines or fireworks. They even did it without costume changes, which McEntire fans have come to expect.
No, all the pyrotechnics were saved for the women's vocalizations, which when combined at times reached out-of-this-world proportions.
The concert tour, which will hit 15 towns before its conclusion next month, grew out of a CMT cable television "Crossroads" special that paired the two singers last summer, though they had shared a stage once before when McEntire appeared as a guest on the first season of "American Idol" to sing with then-contestant Clarkson.
The tour brings together performers of different generations who have been primarily associated with different musical genres. Though side-by-side, their stylings had more similarities than might have been expected.
In terms of their age, let's just say that five years before Kelly was born in 1982, Reba was a full-fledged member of the Grand Ole Opry.
Let's say it, and forget it, because McEntire made it irrelevant Thursday night.
Dressed in matching tight black jeans and similar black sequined-fronted tank tops, the fit and trim McEntire came nowhere close to assuming any matron-like persona beside the younger Clarkson.

Kelly, never the idle Idol
Sarah Walters
8/ 1/2008

SITTING in the miserable Manchester drizzle, it's hard to empathise with the enthusiastic Kelly Clarkson as she proclaims a love for the city unrivalled even by its own residents.

"God, I love Manchester," howls Kelly, her Texan accent still plump and pronounced. "Manchester always comes out for us, it is one of my biggest audiences. That's why we're starting the tour there, Manchester will get it all going.

"I've always loved travelling and coming over here. I like touring, but I tour so much in America that it's good to bring my shows over here.

"We're doing so many dates this time because it's my favourite part of my job, being with the fans and the band. I love living on the road, away from all the nonsense of the industry."

To give the city its dues, Manchester, where her 11-date tour begins in March, has supported Kelly since she won the landmark first series of American Idol in 2002. It seems far longer ago that she started on the road to pop stardom - a journey that's seen her sell more than 10m albums and scoop a bucketload of awards and famous fans along the way.

Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson's upcoming 2 Worlds 2 Voices Tour will find the pair doing lots of duets and sharing one band. The pair will be backed by a single band and they will both stay on stage throughout the show. "She's a huge fan of my music, which delights the fire out of me, and I'm a huge fan of her music," McEntire told Billboard.com. "We're both gonna have so much fun singing each other's songs. They're great songs. Her songs tell stories and so do mine - they're heartfelt, they're emotional, they're fun."
